Access Control Regulations

Dec 9, 2014   //   by John McLaughlin   //   News  //  Comments Off on Access Control Regulations

Access Control Regulations

According to the Private Security Authority, anyone installing one of the following Access Control systems are required to have a licence from the PSA.

  • Any gate, access control barrier or other access control devise installed in a commercial setting.
  • Any access control barrier or other access control device installed in a domestic setting.
  • Any gate, whose height is greater than 1.5 meters from the ground, installed in a domestic setting.

Did you know?

Recent regulations introduced state that it is now an offence under the Private Security Services Acts to install, maintain, service or repair a CCTV or Access Control System without a license. There are a range of penalties for the illegal installation of these systems ranging from fines of up to €3,000 and or imprisonment of up to 12 months.

It’s also states in the same act that “any person employing an unlicensed contractor to carry out such works will also be breaking the law and subject to prosecution.” A person in the case of these statements refers to a householder/ business.

What to do?

When considering the installation of access control or CCTV systems, it is important to ensure that the installing contractor is qualified and licenced to do so. Failure to adhere to these guidelines could involve penalties as set out above.

For More information on these regulations, see http://www.psa.gov.ie/. Don’t mess with your businesses future.  Trust a certified PSA contractor to carry out your works.

Additional Information on Automatic Gates

Aug 19, 2014   //   by Shane Kerins   //   News  //  Comments Off on Additional Information on Automatic Gates

Should you use Automatic Gates or Electric Gates?

Automatic Gates, also referred to as Electric or Electronic Gates are extremely convenient and provide a wonderful sense of security and peace of mind. The difference in terminology arose due to the fact that the gate driver mechanisms are electrically operated but electronically controlled.

How are Automatic Gates Controlled?

Automatic Gates can be controlled very easily and in a number of different ways. The most common is a small key-ring type transmitter which will operate your automatic gates up to 100 metres away. You can also control your automated gates through your mobile phone via a Gate GSM which will only allow access to nominated phone users.

Other methods of controlling automatic gate systems include audio/audio video intercoms between the entrance gates and your residence. The caller can be identified and the Automatic Gates opened by pressing a button on the telephone. A digital keypad fitted at the entrance allows regular callers to enter a designated pass code to open your automatic gates. For total remote control a GSM entrance gate intercom can connect the caller directly to your mobile phone. You can then open your automatic gates with a single keystroke if required.

What types of Electric/Automatic Gates are available?

There are two fundamental gate types, Automatic Sliding Gates and Automatic Swing/Leaf types.

Automatic Sliding gates run on a glide track set into the ground which is unobtrusive. They are the obvious choice for driveways with steep inclines in the vicinity of the gate area. However there must be sufficient space for the gate to slide back equal to the width of the driveway. This type of electronic gate or electric gate system is powered by a single geared motor assembly employing rack and pinion drive principles for gate motion.

Electronic Gates or Electric Gates of the wing or leaf type require an alternative type of drive mechanisms to those described above and these can be considered under two main categories: Underground and Overground.

Which is best: Overground or Underground Automated Gates?

Underground Electronic Gate Operators: are set into the driveway underneath each gate wing and have the advantage of being almost invisible. Careful consideration must be given to the site conditions to ensure that adequate water drainage is provided and maintained from the underground motor assemblies.

Overground Electronic Gate Operators: are less expensive and easier to install as there is less civil work involved. There are two types of operators with different operating principles. The most popular is the linear actuator or ram type. With the later model the actuator spindle is attached to the gate wing and the driver mechanism to the pillar. In operation the spindle extends to close and retracts to open the gate. The second type of operator is referred to as the articulated arm driver. With this model the drive motor is attached to the gate pillars and a pivoting arm connects the motor to the gate wing. In operation the motor shaft rotates causing the articulated arm to swing, providing the necessary gate movement.

There are several grades of driver mechanisms in each category and we can provide expert advice on a system most suited to your requirements.
